BATON ROUGE

Baton Rouge’s landmarks include the castle-like Old Louisiana State Capitol and Magnolia Mound Plantation, with its French Creole house.  Baton Rouge houses a number of interactive museums, with the Old Governor’s Mansion, Capitol Park Museum and the Louisiana Art and Science Museum.  Visit the historic USS Kidd National Landmark, and walk the decks of the only surviving Fletcher-class destroyer not modernized by the U.S. Navy.  Tour the Nautical Center, where one can learn about the history of shipbuilding and navigation.  The LSU Rural Life Museum is a complex of refurbished buildings illustrating 18th- and 19th-century life.  Venture into the countryside and learn about plantation life on the way to Houmas House, the Crown Jewel of Louisiana’s River Road.  Originally built in the late 1700s, the magnificent Greek Revival mansion was added in 1840.
